Parts of the pier at the seaside resort of Scheveningen are in such a bad state that without action it will no longer be safe by 2025, a technical appraisal by The Hague local council has shown.

‘We shall then have to close the pier,’ urban development chief Anne Mulder told the AD. The pier dates from 1961 and has come to to symbolise Scheveningen as a popular beach resort.

Mulder said the council will be talking to owner Pier BV, entrepreneurs and locals about the future of the pier. The three options are closure, a complete ‘revitalisation’ of the pier and redevelopment by the owner, he said.

Owner Pier BV has said it wants clarity about the council’s long-term plans for the pier and has reportedly indicated it will only invest if it can also build luxury homes on the site.

The council has recently presented presented its plans for the next 20 years which envisage Scheveningen as an upmarket place which will attract the more well-heeled. It is not clear if the Scheveningse Pier will still be part of that.
