Over six million foreign tourists visited the Netherlands in 2021 almost 70% down on the pre-coronavirus year of 2019.

The 2021 total is also down 14% on 2020, when international travel was virtually halted for long periods, the Dutch tourist and convention board NBTC said.

Locals, however, did spend more time holidaying at home, with the number of overnight stays at hotels, campsites and holiday parks virtually unchanged on 2019.

This year the NBTC is expecting more Dutch people to head for the sun in southern Europe, which will lead to a 7% decline in people holidaying at home.
