A 32-year-old man from Leiden has been arrested in connection with the death of a 14-year-old girl who went missing last Thursday night.

Her body was found in a wooded area near Lammenschans railway station by joggers on Friday morning and the man was arrested later in the day, police have now said. According to the Telegraaf, her body had been placed leaning against a tree.

Police say their initial investigation into her death led to the man, who will appear in court later on Monday for a remand hearing. No more details have yet been released.

The Telegraaf named the dead girl as Esmee, who attended a special school for children who need extra support. She was reported missing around midnight on Thursday, the paper said.

Her friends came together in the place where she was found on Sunday and left flowers and notes.
