The Dutch cycled fewer kilometres last year, thanks to working from home and closed schools and daycare centres, road users organisation Bovag said on Tuesday.

The average distance covered by bike in 2020 was 966 kilometres, compared with 1,112 kilometres in 2019. Travel by bike to school and daycare fell by 39% and to work by 32%.

However, cycling for fun was more popular last year. The Dutch covered 30% more kilometres by bike on days out or while taking exercise, Bovag said.

The Dutch cycled less in every province but Zeeland, where the distance covered by bike actually rose 10% to 1,255 kilometres.
