THIRD PARTY CONTENT – If you are considering renovating your house in the Netherlands, one of the things you might look at updating is the floor. In the past, you did not have many options when deciding what type of floor you wanted, but this is no longer the case.

Of course, you could still opt for a traditional hardwood floor or a laminate version if you wanted an easy-care option. For a more industrial feel, a floor that looks like it is made of concrete, known as a betonlook vloer in Dutch is also a possibility.  Other options for a more contemporary look include an epoxy floor, epoxy vloer in Dutch, or a cast resin floor (gietvloer).

Hard-wearing

Cast resin floors are usually very well protected against wear and tear. They have a top coat for the shine, but the material itself will not discolour. Where a laminate floor or carpet will become dull or faded in time, this is not the case with a cast resin floor. This means that over their lifetime resin floors are not only great to look at but offer great value over other, more traditional types of flooring.

Easy to maintain

A cast resin floor is both water resistant and easy to keep clean. You must however maintain the floor with a suitable cleaning agent and you must also wax the floor periodically to keep the top layer in good condition. In between cleans, a damp cloth is enough to clean up any spills or spots. Resin floors are also ideal for people with dust allergies because they are so easy to keep dust free.

Floor options

If you have children, you can choose a polyurethane floor that has a little elasticity, to help protect them against bumps and bruises. A polyurethane floor will also feel warm to the touch. By contrast, an epoxy floor is rock hard. If you have elderly people in the house, a non-slip finish is also an option.

For extra comfort, resin floors are also easy to combine with underfloor heating. And in terms of colour, anything is possible, so you can even turn your floor into a work of art. A more neutral approach, however, will probably feel less dated in the years to come.  And given a resin floor will look good for 20 years or more, that is something worth thinking about.
