Dutch start-ups have raised more in the first six months of 2021 than in the previous two years combined.

According to data collected by the Dutch Startup Association, Netherlands-based start-ups raised €3.1bn between January and June this year.

The boost is mostly seen by industry experts as catching up from the previous year, when the coronavirus crisis diminished investment.

The total was also boosted by several exceptionally large investments, notably €665m to financial transaction processor Mollie and €678m for customer service platform MessageBird. ‘This is unique,’ DSA chairman Lucien Burm, told NOS.

Nearly one-third of the money raised so far has gone into the financial technology sector. Business services got the next largest amount, with €1.1bn.
