Some 11.3 million coronavirus tests were carried out by regional health boards in the Netherlands between August 2020 and mid April 2021, and 6.7 million people had at least one test during that period, national statistics office CBS said on Monday.

Teenagers and young adults were the most likely to get tested – they accounted for more than double the number of tests taken by the over-65s – but primary school children have been most likely to be tested since February, when schools reopened.

People who work in education were also more likely to get tested than those in other sectors. Some 63% of teachers and other school staff have been tested at least once for coronavirus, compared with between 42% and 53% of all other sectors.

The figures do not include tests carried out in commercial testing centres which are used by people travelling abroad, for example.

In total, almost four in 10 people have had at least one coronavirus test since mass testing really got underway a year ago. Some 16% have been tested three or more times and 17% have had at least one positive result.
