The Dutch football association has issued a statement saying it fully supports Uefa in its opposition to the formation of a super league of European clubs.

The Super League is not in the interests of Dutch football, the KNVB said on Twitter.

In total 12 English, Spanish and Italian clubs on Sunday evening announced their places to create a closed league.

‘If this were to happen, we wish to reiterate that we – Uefa, the English FA, RFEF, FIGC, the Premier League, LaLiga, Lega Serie A, but also FIFA and all our member associations – will remain united in our efforts to stop this cynical project,’ the Uefa statement said, prior to the confirmation of the breakaway plan.

The league is ‘a project that is founded on the self-interest of a few clubs at a time when society needs solidarity more than ever,’ Uefa said.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are the English clubs that have agreed to join the new league, with six others, including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Milan also reported to be on board.
