The first spring storm of the year on Thursday caused one death and, according to the Verbond van Verzekeraars insurers’ association, a €30 million cost in damage.

The Netherlands was battered by stormy weather and gale-force winds, especially in coastal areas, Zeeland and in the north. Trees blew over, roof tiles blew off and flying debris caused further damage.

One man walking in ‘t Schoor in Bemelen, in Limburg, was killed instantly when a tree was uprooted and fell on him, police told the AD. Another mother and baby were wounded by a tree in Den Bosch.

Strong winds of around 80km/h are expected on Saturday, with gusts of up to 100km/h in costal areas, according to weather institute the KNMI.
