Dutch police have issued footage of a man they want to interview in connection with a spate of arson attacks on telecommunications masts throughout the Netherlands.

The video was recorded on Friday near a transmitter in Groningen and shows the man parking his car, walk to the mast carrying a jerrycan, pouring out the liquid and setting it on fire.

The man, said to be tall and white, is aged 25 to 30 and was driving a black Toyota Aygo, police said.

There have been 14 attacks on transmitters since April 3 but it is unclear if the same person is responsible for them. The most recent was in Spijkenisse on Tuesday night.

The fires are being linked to conspiracy theorists who think there is a connection between coronavirus and the introduction of 5G services in the Netherlands. One Dutch Facebook group focused on the theory now has 32,000 members, the NRC said earlier this week.

The Netherlands does not yet have a 5G network although some tests are taking place.
