Several bush fires have broken out in the south and east of the country following the recent spell of warm, dry weather.

At least four chalets were destroyed in a blaze that engulfed the Bij de Bronnen campsite in Nutter, Overijssel. One man who tried to fight the flames before the fire service arrived had to be treated in hospital for burns to his face and arm.

Local newspaper Tubantia reported that the effort to fight the fire was made more difficult by the fact that only one hydrant was available on site. Extra fire engines from around the region answered a call to bring in more water.

The fire is said to have started in an unoccupied caravan.

In the Mariapeel nature reserve, near Deurne, Noord-Brabant, a fire spread to cover an area of 500m by 800m. Eight fire engines responded to the blaze, which was spread rapidly by strong winds. Firefighters used a drone to help track the extent of the flames.

Fire crews from Germany helped tackle another blaze in the De Meindert national park in Herkenbosch, which was first reported at around 1pm. The fire was visible from the nearby town of Weert and the A2 motorway and was threatening a nearby campsite, 1Limburg reported.

People living in the area have been urged to keep doors and windows shut to prevent smoke from the fires from infiltrating their homes.
