Local councils are taking steps to stop groups of motorbike riders and cyclists from using small country roads over the coming Easter weekend and German police will also stop large groups crossing into the Netherlands in border areas, RTL Nieuws reported on Tuesday.

Last weekend it was so busy on the roads in some places that walkers and recreational cyclists were not able to keep to the 1.5 metre rule, Hubert Bruls, head of the regional public safety association told the broadcaster.

A spokesman for the Dutch motorbike riders association KNMV said there are always complaints about bikers on the first nice weekend of the year.

Most had heeded instructions to stay home, but ‘like walkers and cyclists’, there are always those who don’t take the sensible course of action, he said. Nevertheless, the organisation accepts the decision and will call on its members to stay home, the spokesman said.

Prime minister Mark Rutte has already called on tourists to stay home over the Easter weekend.
