A new food bank opened its doors to help Amsterdam’s poorest residents on Tuesday – this time focusing on pets.

Animal food banks already exist in Lelystad, Almere and Vught, the Telegraaf reports.Several hundred people make use of the existing food banks to pick up free meals for their pets, the paper says.

The Amsterdam animal food bank is located in Noord and can be used by people who are in such deep financial trouble that the city council has taken charge of their finances. Single people are eligible if they have no more than €35 a week left to spend after debt repayments have been made, while couples with out children can have up to €55.
