Kurhaus hotel will be closed off during nuclear security summit

The Kurhaus hotel and entertainment complex in Scheveningen will disappear behind a closed fence as a security precaution during the nuclear summit in The Hague next month.

A number of international leaders will stay in the hotel during the two-day meeting on March 24 and March 25. The beach will remain open to walkers but swimming, windsurfing and sailing off the coast at Scheveningen will be banned, the Hague’s mayor Jozias van Aartsen says.

In addition, shops and cafes on the ground floor of the complex will be closed and owners will not be compensated.

Van Aartsen says the Netherlands has no choice but to ensure very strict security. ‘We are used to our ministers and mayors cycling and luckily that is still possible,’ he says. ‘But we have to do what is asked of us. Otherwise people will not come to the Netherlands and this summit is very beneficial to us.’

Road traffic around The Hague will also be severely disrupted during the summit, which will be attended by some 50 world leaders, including Russian leader Vladimir Putin and United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon.
