The Netherlands’ three biggest natural heritage groups are joining forces to ensure a more coordinated and efficient approach to managing the country’s national parks and rural landscape.

The forestry commission Staatsbosbeheer, natural heritage group Natuurmonumenten and province-based 12Landschappen hope to save some 10% of their annual budgets with the new approach, they say in a statement.

The new approach means the three organisations will divide up the areas of work between them and share facilities. Between them, they currently manage some 477,000 hectares of countryside.

For example, Natuurmonumenten will take over running smaller plots of land owned by the other organisations if they border one of its national parks. The sale of timber will also be coordinated.

The three organisations’ holiday homes will also be rented out by a single body.
