Court order transport minister to rethink Amsterdam ring road speed

A court in Amsterdam has torn up the transport minister’s decision to increase the speed limit on Amsterdam’s ring road from 80 kph to 100 kph during the day.

The court ruled Melanie Shultz had not taken sufficient account of the health risks associated with faster traffic and should look at her decision again. She has been given six weeks to revise her position.

In the meantime, the current speed limits will remain in place. According to the Parool, the 100 kph on the western part of the ring road gives motorists a 43.9 second advantage.

The minister was earlier order to rethink a speed increase on the A13 for similar reasons. In a reaction she told local broadcaster AT5 she is disappointed.

‘It is never nice if the judge orders you to do your homework again,’ she said. Schultz said she will now read the full ruling and decide whether or not to appeal.
