Phone firms profit drops, fewer calls not offset by data traffic fees
The combined turnover of Dutch mobile phone providers fell 6.7% in the second quarter of this year, according to industry analyst Telecompaper.
Total turnover reached €1.38bn, up a marginal €8m on the first quarter. But the difference is usually far greater because more calls are usually made in the second three months of the year, Telecompaper is quoted as saying by news agency ANP
Over 2013 as a whole, turnover is likely to drop 6% to €5.5bn, the researcher group said, and by 2017, sales will have gone down to €5.1bn. This is due to the economic downturn, lower fees and competition from free communications services such as WhatsApp.
However, Vodafone was able to win market share from KPN and T-Mobile, Telecompaper said.
A European Commission report in May said Dutch mobile phone charges were the third highest in Europe.
