Shell’s chief executive in surprise move to retire next year

Shell chief executive Peter Voser will leave the company in the first half of next year out of choice, the oil giant said on Thursday.

Voser’s departure is a surprise and the Swiss national had been expected to stay in the job for several more years, the Financieele Dagblad reported.

Voser, who is retiring, made the decision to go after 25 years with the company.

Voser took over in July 2009. Under his leadership the company has boosted its profitability and sold off a large number of non-core activities.

The news of Voser’s retirement came as Shell published its 2013 first quarter figures. The company said its first quarter earnings, based on the current cost of supplies (CCS), were $8bn, compared with $7.7bn a year ago.
