EU pensions boss tries to soothe Dutch feathers

Brussels is not going to force Dutch pension funds to increase their buffers from one day to the next, Gabriel Bernardino, chairman of the European pension authority Eiopa told the Financieele Dagblad in an interview.

‘It is not at all clear if Europe thinks higher buffers are necessary,’ Bernardino told the paper. ‘We are still in the research phase.’
And if the buffers do need to be increased, that does not mean pensions will have to be reduced or that companies will have to top up their funds with immediate effect,’ he said. ‘We will take time to do everything,’ he said.
Dutch pension funds have been lobbying against new EU rules for pension funds, particularly reports they may have to meet the same financial buffers as insurance companies. The government is also actively campaigning against the idea.
