The Dutch doping authority, which aims to catch sport cheats who boost their performance using drugs, does not have the capacity to trace serious cases, director Herman Ram says in Thursday’s Trouw.

Ram wants more cooperation with other detection agencies to investigate serious cases. ‘At the moment we can’t catch the worst offenders but do pick up the more minor ones. That is not the way it should be,’ Nos quotes Ram as telling the paper. ‘We cannot tackle the major, organised use [of doping],’ he said.
This would require more money, more powers and more government information from government agencies such as the police, justice ministry, customs and financial investigators, he told the paper.

Ram said the authority has been unable to follow up on evidence linked to doping use by top athletes because of the authority’s lack of power.
He refused to say which athletes were involved but did say they were ‘top athletes’ according to Dutch Olympic association definitions.
Several Dutch cyclists have been implicated in the recent cycling scandal surrounding disgraced Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and Rabobank is to stop sponsoring the professional men’s sport.
The Dutch cycling union KNWU said earlier this week it is setting up its own investigation.
