Telecom sector watchdog Opta has fined a Dutch firm €100,000 for sending emails to 15 million addresses without determining whether or not they wanted to receive them.

Although visitors to the website vraaguwofferte.nl were asked to tick a box if they wanted to receive a newsletter, the company sent the mails to everyone on its email list, Opta said.
In total 680 people made a complaint to Opta. The emails were sent between 2009 and 2011.
It is illegal in the Netherlands to send junk emails to private individuals and companies. Some 90% of email traffic in the Netherlands is junk mail.
Companies caught breaking the rules can be fined up to €450,000.
