Employers’ leader Bernard Wientjes has criticised the accepted Dutch practice of ‘last in first out’ when it comes to corporate redundancies.

At the moment, companies usually dismiss their newer workers when reducing the size of their workforce.
Speaking on BNR radio on Wednesday, the VNO-NCW leader said: ‘It is a bad principle’.
‘It does not take quality into account and I think employers who are cutting jobs should be looking at the quality of their staff,’ he said.
The idea of demotion and cutting the salary of workers who have been with a company a long time should also no longer be taboo, he said.
‘But this is bound to be an issue now we are all going to work longer,’ Wientjes told BNR. ‘There are workers who want to take a step backwards because their job is too heavy. We need to make good agreements for them.’
