Donate blood or stop smoking to cut health insurance fees

Health insurance company Menzis is to offer clients a discount if they live a more healthy lifestyle, the AD reports on Monday.

For example, someone who stops smoking or takes up sport, donates blood or looks after a sick relative can build up points towards a discount.
‘We want to stimulate people to live a healthier life. People who are fit are sick less often and feel better about themselves,’ company chairman Roger van Boxtel told the AD on Monday.
Prevention
‘By focusing on prevention, we can help limit the rise in healthcare costs,’ Van Boxtel said.
Clients can build up a maximum 5,000 points over a three-year period which will be worth €250. They can use the bonus to reduce their own risk payments or pay for other services, such as walking aids.
Menzis will not develop its own ‘healthcare police’ to ensure people are being honest but may carry out sample checks on claims, the AD said. The company has some 1.2 million policyholders.
