State gambling group hit by recession

The state-owned casino monopoly group Holland Casino saw net profit plummet 83% to €14m in 2008.


The company, which operates 14 casinos nationwide, said it would cut between 100 and 300 jobs and did not rule out compulsory redundancies.
Holland Casino blamed the downturn on the recession, the ban on smoking and growing competition from the internet. Visitor numbers were down 15%, the company said.
