Marco van Basten quits as Ajax trainer

Marco van Basten has resigned as chief coach at Amsterdam football club Ajax with immediate effect.

Van Basten said in a statement on the Ajax website that his main reason for resigning is his failure to achieve his targets. Nor did he feel confident he could improve the team next season, the statement said.
Ajax is set to finish third in the premier division, failing to qualify for the lucrative Champions League competition. Ajax also failed to make it through to the final stages of the Dutch national cup.
Van Basten has been coach at Ajax since July 2008 after spending four years in charge of the Dutch national team.
His assistant John van ‘t Schip will be in charge at the last match of the season, against the premier division’s second placed FC Twente, Ajax said.
