Trafigura banned from witness contact

Amsterdam-based oil trader Trafigura has been banned from contacting witnesses in the Probo Koala waste-dumping case by the high court in London, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

According to law firm Leigh Day & Co, a number of claimants say they have been contacted by Trafigura, including one ‘who says he was offered inducements resulting in him changing his statement and in his being flown to Morocco to meet with executives’.
Leigh Day is specialised in international damages claims and represents a number of people who claim they were injured when tonnes of toxic waste from the Probo Koala were dumped at several locations in the port city of Abidjan. Tens of thousands of people became ill and at least 15 died, according to Ivory Coast government figures.
The Probo Koala docked in Amsterdam for a time before heading for Ivory Coast. The company and Dutch local government officials are also on trial in the Netherlands.
