Taxi firm TCA opts out of quality control

Amsterdam taxi firm TCA has withdrawn from the TX taxi quality control system because it is failing to ensure good service, TCA boss Bas Vos told news agency ANP on Tuesday.

The quality system was launched a year ago to guarantee taxi drivers had minimum levels of street knowledge, that their cars were not too old and were properly insured. Only taxis with a TX certificate are allowed to pick up passengers at Amsterdam central station.
The aim was to stop fights between drivers and to stop them refusing to take people on short journeys.
But TCA says there is mounting evidence that the certificate system is failing. It is now working with taxi organisations in other cities to develop its own quality control system.
