‘Stop civil service early retirement’

A reduction in generous civil service early retirement schemes could prevent the planned increase in pension fund contributions, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

Last week it emerged that the civil service pension fund ABP plans to increase premiums for the next four years in order to bolster its assets. The increase will cost the treasury €600m a year.
But if civil servants work on until the age of 65, and there are cuts in early retirement provisions, that increase could be averted, government negotiator Hugo Levie told the paper. Civil service early retirement costs the treasury €1.5bn a year.
Home affairs minister Guusje ter Horst has threatened to cut jobs if the pension premium increase goes ahead.
