Queen’s Day honours list totals 3,572

A total of 3,572 people have been awarded honours in the traditional honours list published on the eve of Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day).

Among the famous faces being honoured in this year’s lintjesregen – rain of ribbons – are tv presenter Karel van de Graaf, artist Frank Sanders and writer Marion Bloem.
Most people – 3,560 – were made members of the Order of Oranje-Nassau – which has six levels. The honour was introduced in 1892 for foreigners and the ‘lower classes’. Twelve people were honoured with membership of the more exclusive Order of the Dutch Lion, which has three grades and dates to 1815.
Volunteers
Most of the honours – 3,489 – went to people who carry out voluntary work, reports the NRC. The highest honour this year went to the former Australian ambassador to the Netherlands Stephen Brady, who was named Commander in the Order of Oranje-Nassau.
The oldest recipient this year is a 92-year-old man who has worked for war veteran organisations since the 1950s, reports news agency Novum. The youngest is a 33-year-old man who runs a day care centre for the handicapped on his farm.
