The voting council has removed five people from the list of candidates for the June 4 European elections because their applications were not filled in properly or they had forgotten to submit all the necessary documents.

In total, 17 parties are contesting the election in the Netherlands, two more than in 2005. The application procedure ended on Monday.
Among the candidates are former world drafts champion Harm Wiersma and his son Joeri. They, along with Pim Fortuyn look-alike Engel Vrouwe, make up the European Klokkenluiders Party (whistleblowers party), which aims to focus on EU fraud.
Meanwhile, the Liberal Democrats (D66) are advertising their support for the EU with a massive roadside billboard in Portugal. The aim is to encourage Dutch nationals living abroad to vote at home, a party spokesman said.
