‘Youth unemployment set to explode’

There will be an explosive growth in youth unemployment as a result of the economic crisis unless special measures are introduced, according to the youth wing of the trade union federation FNV.

In a report presented to youth and family minister Andre Rouvoet on Thursday, the youth arm of the FNV calls for a guarantee of schooling or work within six months for unemployed young people, reports the Telegraaf.
More schooling could be offered by temporarily lowering the fees for vocational education (mbo) and a temporary extension of study grants, says the FNV report.
It also wants to see a new taskforce for youth unemployment set up, which would be willing to take unorthodox measures and would coordinate across the various ministries.
Developments in the jobs market for young people are so bad there is talk of a ‘lost generation’, says FNV’s youth wing.
Rouvoet said he is sensitive to the call for help from the youth department of the union but declined to react to the concrete proposals contained in the report.
The cabinet is currently working on a package of measures to stimulate the economy and Roevoet promised specific attention to the problem of youth unemployment.
‘Young people are a particularly vulnerable group. They will be the first to be hit [by the recession], ‘ the minister is quoted as saying by ANP.
