The Hague to host Afghan conference

An international conference about Afghanistan at the end of March will be held in The Hague, RTL Nieuws reported on Monday evening.

The Netherlands was asked by US secretary of state Hillary Clinton last week whether it would be prepared to organise an international summit on the security of Afghanistan (click here for story).
Dutch foreign affairs minsiter Maxime Verhagen had already accepted the request but until now it was uncertain whether the conference, which will be opened by United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon, would be hosted by The Hague or Maastricht.
All Nato governments involved in Afghanistan as well as countries in the region, possibly including Iran and Pakistan, are expected to attend the conference.
The Netherlands has around 1,700 troops in the southern Afghan province of Uruzgan.
