PM backs fast-track building programme

Prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende is prepared to introduce temporary legislation which would reduce the permits and planning procedures needed for construction projects in some parts of the country, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

The legislation, which will only apply during the economic crisis, will be introduced in parliament in June, the paper says.
Ministers believe that kick-starting the building sector is key to boosting the economy during the crisis and will reduce unemployment.
Ministers and coalition party leaders will meet again on Monday to continue their efforts to draw up a package of recession-busting measures.
