Philips to stop producing DVD recorders

Electronics multinational Philips will stop producing new DVD recorders after 2009 because they are not profitable enough, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Wednesday.

The paper says no more will be invested in the product after September and no more recorders will be introduced from next year.
The paper says the Dutch company will probably sell its DVD division to another producer, who will pay to sell the recorders under the Philips name. On Tuesday, Philips announced that its will stop manufacturing computer screens and outsource production to TPV.
Philips has been outsourcing its television and electronic appliance divisions and, with an eye on an ageing population, investing increasingly in the health sector, the FD says. Philips managers say the company plans to become a world leader in the ‘wellness’ sector.
