The government needs to spend €8bn over the next ten years to bring the railway network up to scratch and reduce traffic jams, says NS director Aad Veenman.

Passenger numbers are set to grow 30% over the next decade, he says. ‘If you consider a double-decker train can replace 1,000 cars, then that shows how much the railways can help – alongside investment in roads,’ Veenman told ANP.
The NS wants to use the money to improve the infrastructure at 50 railway blackspots.This would include adding overtaking tracks in some places.
