Rail network needs €8bn, says NS boss

The government needs to spend €8bn over the next ten years to bring the railway network up to scratch and reduce traffic jams, says NS director Aad Veenman.

Passenger numbers are set to grow 30% over the next decade, he says. ‘If you consider a double-decker train can replace 1,000 cars, then that shows how much the railways can help – alongside investment in roads,’ Veenman told ANP.
The NS wants to use the money to improve the infrastructure at 50 railway blackspots. This would include adding overtaking tracks in some places.
