MPs want tougher law on gay violence

Violence against homosexuals must be punished much harder, say MPs from the two main coalition parties Christian Democrats (CDA) and Labour in today’s Trouw newspaper.

The MPs point out that attacks on homosexuals involve two crimes – violence and discrimination – and call on the justice ministry to make the law tougher when dealing with these sorts of attacks.
The call follows reports earlier this week that violence against homosexuals in Amsterdam has gone up in the last few years.
This is ‘absolutely unacceptable’ and action must be taken to send out a clear deterrent Labour MP Lea Bouwmeester told Trouw. She said she would submit new draft legislation herself if the government does not take action.
As well as tougher punishment, Bouwmeester says a change is needed in police culture. She said that she has received ‘signals’ that the police can be ‘nonchalant’ when homosexuals report attacks.
