More men need safe houses

There is a shortage of safe houses for men who fear for their safety says, reports the AD newspaper on Wednesday.

Existing safe houses are geared solely for women and there are only seven places for men fleeing from danger in the whole of Amsterdam, said the lobby group Federatie Opvang in the AD.
The organisation has called on the government to take action saying that the need for more protection is growing and that at least 50 refuge places for men are needed throughout the country.
In 2006 some 30 men asked for protection, while there have already been 20 requests in the first half of this year, the federation’s director Ineke Smit told the paper.
The group said that the real extent of the problem is not known as many cases are not reported to police. But it points out that two years ago four men were murdered in honour killings. Homosexual Muslims are also a vulneable group.
The justice minister has said he is willing to look into the problem, the paper reports.
