Labour leader speaks out on Jami

The Labour party will not support Ehsan Jami’s committee for ex-Muslims if he thinks that insulting or upsetting Muslims is part of someone’s right when they give up their religion, says Labour leader Wouter Bos in today’s Volkskrant.

Jami has been in the news all week after the anti-terrorism coordinator ordered protection for him following an attack at the weekend.
The attack on Jami is believed to have been carried out because of his outspoken views on Islam. In the past he has described the prophet Mohammed as a ‘terrible’ man.
Yesterday it was reported that Jami has received numerous death threats this week.
As well as being the initiator and chairman of the ex-Muslim committee, Jami is a local Labour councillor. But the national Labour party has had an uneasy relationship with Jami for some time.
In today’s Volkskrant, Bos says that he believes Jami is ‘fighting for an important issue’ which is shared by his party but casts doubts on Jami’s methods.
The Labour party has several MPs and ministers with a Muslim background.
