Amsterdam magistrates have fined 47-year-old Regilio Amelo €400 for insulting queen Beatrix and a policeman.

It is the first time in years that someone has been convicted of the crime of lèse majesté – or crimes against the monarch. The public prosecution department had called for a jail term of two weeks. The maximum sentence for lèse majesté is five years in prison.
Amelo’s lawyer told the court that his client was under the influence of drink and drugs and had attacked the queen not personally but as the representative of the Dutch. The lawyer said Amelo was so under the influence of his hatred of white people that he could not control himself.
The man has also been ordered to serve seven days in jail relating to a previous sentence.
In 2003 two people were fined €250 each for insulting crown prince Willem Alexander on his wedding day to princess Máxima, ANP reports. One called the crown prince ‘stupid’, the other threw a bag containing paint at the golden coach.
