The Netherlands fails to protect endangered species.

The Ministry of agriculture, nature and food safety is not policing the trade in endangered animals properly, according to a report in the Volkskrant on Monday.

Animal protection agencies and animal shelters say that since the special detection team was disbanded in 2005 and the work divided between the general inspection service, customs and police, the trade has not had the necessary priority.
The Netherlands is currently hosting the three-yearly Cites conference on the international trade in endangered species.
