Minister backs Schiphol flight plan

The transport and environment ministers Camiel Eurlings and Jacqueline Cramer back plans to increase flights to and from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport beyond an earlier agreement, Eurlings told MPs on Monday.

The deal, published two weeks ago, allows 480,000 aircraft movements a year at Schiphol up to the end of 2010. The current limit is 430,000 and would have led to the closure of the Buitenveldert runway this August to adhere to noise limits.
Resident groups on Schiphol’s flight paths have reacted angrily to the plan saying that they were not consulted despite claims that the local community agrees to the new limits. MPs are due to discuss the plan on Tuesday afternoon.
