The NATO mission in Afghanistan is in danger of failing because of a shortage of helicopters, Dutch major general Freek Meulman says in an interview in Monday’s Trouw.

Not only do NATO troops have few helicopters at their disposal, but the withdrawal of several US transporters from the south of the country will make the situation worse, Meulman says.
The American helicopters are being moved to Iraq and so far no country has come forward to replace them. If the situation does not change, the entire mission in the south will be at risk, Meulman tells the paper.
NATO has placed a lot of emphasis on the Afghanistan mission, he said. ‘A lot of countries have helicopters. They have to take responsibility and meet the demand.’
