School murder suspect remains in custody

The eight-year-old boy murdered in his primary school on Friday may have been killed because he came across an intruder, the Telegraaf reports today.

The paper quotes police sources saying that Jesse Dingemans stumbled upon the suspect, 22-year-old Julien C, in his classroom when he went to fetch something. The two knew each other – Julien C is the half-brother of Jesse’s classmate Yuri – says the Telegraaf.
Detectives say Julien C was on parole following a conviction for a supermarket robbery. He was remanded in custody for two more weeks by a court yesterday. The suspect has admitted being at the school on Friday but denies murdering the boy.
The Telegraaf claims that psychologists who interviewed Julien C after the supermarket robbery had warned that he was a ‘ticking bomb’. He was described as impulsive, lacking fear, antisocial and narcisistic, the paper said.
Four specially-trained counsellors have been at the Klim-Op primary school since Monday to help children and teachers come to terms with the murder. Jesse’s funeral will take place on Thursday.
Meanwhile teaching unions have dismissed suggestions by education minister Maria van der Hoeven that schools keep their doors locked. Instead, they called for the reintroduction of school concierges, who have largely vanished because of spending cuts.
