The public should have a role in determining crime-fighting priorities, according to Liberal (VVD) party plans to tackle crime, presented last night. The result of the people’s priority list would be used to draw up tough performance targets with the Public Prosecution Department.

The VVD also wants a national team made up of police, customs and insurance companies to tackle transport crime, such as theft from lorries.
Other plans, which are already in the party manifesto include tougher jail sentences for violent crimes and a more cautious approach to home leave for people in psychiatric prisons.
